Jessica • A One Day Bride
Jess and Michael were married on the picturesque grounds at Stones of the Yarra Valley. Wearing our Camelia wedding gown and tear drop veil, Jess fell in love with this dress straight away.
BRIDE… Jessica Halliwell
GROOM… Michael Hamill
WEDDING DATE… 19/02/2016
WHEN AND HOW WE MET
We met at a friend’s birthday party when we were 17, but it took a good 6 months of persistence from Michael before we started dating! We’ve been inseparable since.
OUR WEDDING LOCATION
Stones of the Yarra Valley.
We looked at a lot of venues in Victoria (we’re both from Melbourne but live in Canberra) and we fell in love instantly. We chose it because it’s in such a beautiful setting and they are absolutely on the ball with everything from styling, food, presentation and just overall wedding management. It was so easy to plan everything even the distance living interstate.
I don’t know how to word it, but I loved the whole romantic/French eclectic/bohemian chic/not-too-formal-but-still-flowers-everywhere kind of thing. This was achieved through lots and lots of Instagram, Pinterest and blog stalking for ideas – I DIY’d the place cards, menus, favour tags and Michael and I made the spice for the favours.
We didn’t have a stylist, but Stones and the florist together were amazing – I had lots of flowers and candles to create the romantic atmosphere I was after.
THE BEST ADVICE I WAS GIVEN…
I didn’t really get any straight up advice. When we started planning neither of us had actually ever been to a wedding. So I would ask people what their favourite memory was at a wedding and get ideas from what they told me – as what we mainly wanted was for everyone to have a good time!
WHAT WAS YOUR NON NEGOTIABLE FOR THE DAY?
We wanted the day to be a party. We definitely wanted a live band – we had everyone up and dancing even before the entrees! And good food…and lots of it!
I actually had two Hen’s days, my friends spoiled me – and it was all a surprise!
In Canberra: I went to my usual tabata gym class with my friends, but they forced me into an 80’s wedding dress and I was made to push my fiancé down an aisle where we were ‘married’ at the end by the trainer “in fitness and in health” (so embarrassing).
But the rest of the day was nice and relaxing with a Flower Crown class and a cocktail event.
In Melbourne: First was a twerking class (absolutely hilarious, with the mums and aunties too), then lunch with another Flower Crown class by the gathering florist, then a life drawing class followed up with a cocktail making class at Katuk bar. We finished with a late dinner at Fonda.
BRIDE’S SUPPLIERS OF CHOICE
PHOTOGRAPHER: Aparat photography
Jakub and Zosia – a brother and sister duo (we had Zosia for our day). We looked at weddings they have photographed and the photos are so down to earth and beautiful and their style is was exactly what we were after.
We are thrilled with our photos, and Zosia has captured so many beautiful moments!
HAIR + MAKE UP: Zoe Karlis
Instagram: @zoekarlismakeup. She was absolutely amazing and such a lovely person.
CELEBRANT: Macushla Weddings – Sophie Cleary
She is down to earth and made the ceremony really personal and emotional but also light hearted which is what we wanted.
CEREMONY VENUE: Stones of the Yarra Valley
(Drinks for guests before arrival at the Stables, ceremony in the Chapel, canapes in the Dairy and the reception in the Barn).
DRESS & VEIL
I had been spying Kyha’s gorgeous One Day gowns for a while. Kyha was at my first consultation and actually picked out the dress for me to try on, it wasn’t like anything I had tried on before, and I fell in love with it straight away!
I came down from Canberra for multiple fittings, and it was pretty exciting to see how the dress progressed each time. The girls were all so lovely and they are amazing at what they do, I loved my dress and the total experience.
SHOES: Joanne Mercer
I knew I wanted a red party shoes, but I’d had no luck finding anything for a while. One day I just happened to walk into a Jo Mercer store with a friend and there they were!
I had 4 bridesmaids. I knew that I wanted a plum/oxblood colour and had been looking online for ideas, and I came across the dresses at Seduce purely by accident! I was actually at the shops to get something done but immediately forgot about it because I got distracted by the dress in the window and I went straight in and got them!
FLOWERS: Sugar Bee Flowers
I was after an abundance of flowers and foliage and Youki from Sugarbee absolutely did that! The bouquets and the arrangements smelt amazing too.
CAKE: The Village Bakery
We got two cakes, one carrot cake (‘semi-naked’) and a white chocolate mud cake.
BAND OR DJ: Baker Boys Band
We had 2 members for the ceremony, 3 for the canapes and 6 for the reception.
GIFT REGISTORY OR WISHING WELL
We had a wishing well. The gift thing didn’t really suit us, just because we’ve lived together for about five years now and have already bought pretty much everything we need for around the house – we would never be able to get gifts back on a plane to Canberra – think of the overweight luggage fees!
We are having a big European honeymoon (June – October), and thought a wishing well would be a contribution towards that as our wedding gift instead.
