CLAIRE + JAMES

9th March 2018

WHEN AND HOW WE MET

We’re high school sweethearts! We met at Caulfield Grammar when starting secondary school in 2003. In 2005, after a Year 9 school trip to China we started dating. It was a typical secondary school romance – lots of awkward school corridor conversations, late night ‘MSN’ chats and movie dates with my mates hanging out a couple of rows behind us. After coming back from China, James said to his parents ‘I think I have a girlfriend now…’

We’d been together 13 years when we got married in March 2018.

OUR WEDDING LOCATION

Tanglewood Estate, Dromana.

As soon as we drove into Tanglewood, we knew. You get an instant casual, winery, farm-like vibe and driving down the 2km of dirt road through back streets of Dromana sets the scene for the venue. We chose Tanglewood as the venue only allows one wedding per day, so the place is all yours. The biggest thing for us though was the multiple options for settings: a ceremony by the dam, in the bushes or in their onsite chapel; a reception in a winery building or a barn setting. The options were endless and the family that own the property were very flexible.

THE DRESS : CHOSEN Broome Gown

I was set on getting a One Day gown. One Day had always appeared throughout my teenage years: I lived in Elwood where the studio once was and remember walking past the shop front which always had a stunning gown on display and remember thinking ‘that is what I want on my big day’ (…to pretty much every gown that was in the front window). When I embarked on wedding dress shopping I was nervous – I’m not a feminine or lacy girl. I was clear on what I wanted which was something structured, timeless and simple with a beautiful silhouette. I had no other wedding shops booked aside from One Day, so I’m lucky that ‘the gown’ was the first one I tried on!

THE GROOM

James wore a MJ Bale suit.

WHAT WAS YOUR NON NEGOTIABLE FOR THE DAY?

We had to have a photographer that knew Tanglewood and would capture the essence of the day. This was important to us because when the day is gone you get so much love and energy from your memories and photos. Daniel Brannan is like part of the furniture at Tanglewood; he knew all of the perfect, secret spots on the property and made us feel very relaxed. It would be remiss of us not to mention Lachlan Tangas from Tango Films (videographer) too. We originally didn’t want a wedding video, but his creations are artistic, modern and full of emotion.

HENS DAY

My hens day was organised by my sister and best friend. We started the day life drawing at Creative Hen in St Kilda which was so much fun (safe to say I’m not pursuing a career in art). We then headed to my parents’ house for an array of three of my loves; cheese, wine and espresso martinis and some dancing.

YOUR ADVICE FOR FUTURE BRIDES
Don’t sweat the small stuff, that’s not what the day is all about. It’s about celebrating you and your future husband embarking on the rest of your lives together.
